< Techniques The IRTF spectrometry is used to characterize organic matter. It is, among other things used to determine the nature of the binder in a painting. The IR micro spectrometry technique allow very small area analyse (several microns). It is possible for example to determine the nature of binders on different layers of a painting stratigraphy. We can also use microchemical tests to differentiate lipid and protein binder for each layer of stratigraphy.
Stratigraphy view of chemical test with "bleu de Nil". This product indicates lipid binder when layer is blue.
