Why to mark works of art ? " Less than 5 % of the stolen objects is found and restored to their owner " (AFP 2003 source) The phenomenon of the theft and the receiving of cultural possessions is international. In France, the number of stolen works of art listed varies between 6000 and 7000 per year . The movable inheritance is often touched. A hundred classified as objects “historic buildings” were catch in the year 2000 in sixty-four different places. In the same way, of many not protected objects are coveted and concealed in the monuments belonging to the public domain of the State. The rate of elucidation of these businesses is difficult to appreciate: a hundred only is clarified each year by the services of police force and french gendarmerie and relates to sometimes stolen objects before several years. In 2000, the investigations diligentées by the central Office of fight against the traffic of the cultural goods (OCBC) led to the rediscovery of objects of a total value of 23 million french franc.
